Barrie and Surrounds
Barrie experiences a cool temperate climate where much of the forest, both urban and rural, is situated on fine to course sands, intermixed with islands of heavier soils. The upper ground elevation comes to a little over a thousand feet. Weather generally travels from the north-west, from Georgian Bay (attached to Lake Huron) so we experience lake effect storms from time to time, especially in January and June. These are all generalizations, of course, but should help to provide a flavour of our neighborhood.
The Barrie Forestry Club and the World Forestry Club are related, in that to gain a better understanding of how forests work worldwide, it is necessary to experience what is happening on one's own doorstep. Here it starts with the BFC, but it is hoped that the WFC will become a network of local clubs which will share formation across the planet. This can only happen with enthusiastic individuals in each of these communities, willing to share their local experiences with the rest of us.
For now, the BFC can provide a secretariat, willing to coordinate a growing network of local "clubs" with the awareness, however, that this job could become rapidly complex, and will require input to prevent such a network from getting out of hand.
